FAQ

Blade sign questions

Do blade signs need a sign hanger?

Under NYC Construction Code §28-415.1, a Licensed Sign Hanger must perform or directly supervise most exterior sign installation; §28-415.2 exempts some signs, such as signs of 75 sf or less weighing 25 lb or less. Arc coordinates with a Licensed Sign Hanger where one is required.

How far can a blade project?

Zoning sets limits. In many commercial districts, ZR §32-652 (C1–C5, C6-1 through C6-4, C6-6, C6-8, C6-9, C6-11, C6-12, C7, C8) allows up to 12 in across the street line, or 18 in for double- or multi-faced blades, except as provided in §32-653; ZR §32-651 (C6-5, C6-7) allows up to 8 ft, except as provided in §32-653. Send the street address and facade photos early so Arc can check the district.

Can blades be non-lit?

A non-lit blade skips the electrical permit, but it generally still needs a DOB sign permit. Arc confirms with the licensed applicant.
